Planned Giving

Many people whose lives have been touched by NBA Woodhaven choose to make a lasting contribution to the men and women we serve by including NBA Woodhaven in their estate plans. Families of individuals served, members of Disciples of Christ churches, and friends with an interest in people with disabilities have chosen to make leave behind a tangible symbol of their dedication to NBA Woodhaven's mission.

There are two main ways you can benefit the men and women served by NBA Woodhaven in your estate plans: a bequest or a charitable gift annuity.

Bequest

A bequest is a distribution from your estate to NBA Woodhaven specified in your last will and testament. Your estate is the sum of all your assets, including property you own, the cash in your bank account, your retirement accounts, insurance policies and other items that make up your net worth.

There are four main types of bequests that can benefit the individuals served by NBA Woodhaven:

  • Unrestricted bequest is made by designating a dollar amount, a specific asset, or a percentage of your estate to NBA Woodhaven for its general purposes.
  • Specific bequest is made when the money or property that is bequeathed to NBA Woodhaven is designated for a designated purpose.
  • Residuary bequest is a gift of whatever is left of your estate after you have provided for others.
  • Contingency bequest is a gift given in the event that your primary beneficiaries do not survive you.
Charitable Gift Annuity

A charitable gift annuity provides you, the donor, with investment income during your lifetime. To set up a charitable gift annuity, you enter into a contract with NBA Woodhaven putting a set sum of money into the annuity. The annuity pays a distribution of the interest earned on the annuity each year for your lifetime. After your death, the principle is transferred to NBA Woodhaven for general or designated purposes. You, the donor, receive a tax benefit in the year that you make the charitable gift annuity, as well as on the payments you receive.
